DMPA®
DMPA® brand of Dimethylolpropionic Acid is a unique, trifunctional compound incorporating a hindered, tertiary carboxylic acid group and two reactive, primary hydroxyls. The hindered carboxyl is less reactive than most acid groups. Therefore, DMPA® reacts as a diol. It may be used as a modifier for urethane, polyester/alkyd, phenolic, amino, and epoxy systems. The hindered carboxyl of DMPA® makes the introduction of free acid groups easy and convenient.
With DMPA®, acid groups may be introduced directly, often in one step, without the need to
saponify protecting groups. In the case of polyesters and alkyds, the use of DMPA® is especially convenient. Special cooking procedures are not required. Often DMPA® may be included in the initial kettle charge. The resin is then cooked directly to the desired acid value.
